Whimsical - The Word I Didn't Know I Needed (Until I Started Making Phone Cases)
Before I started working with consumer graphics, I genuinely don't remember hearing the word "whimsical" in the wild. Not in the workshop, not on site, not in any of the jobs I had before design took over my life. If someone had said it, I'd probably have nodded politely and then gone home thinking, "Right… what on earth does that mean then?"
Fast forward to running a premium phone case brand, and suddenly whimsical is everywhere. It pops up in comments, product feedback, Pinterest searches, even in the way people describe a design that makes them smile for no rational reason. And once you properly notice it, you realise it's not just a word people throw around. It's a whole vibe.
I wanted to go a bit deeper here and show you exactly what "whimsical" looks like in practice — with a few of my own designs as examples from Head Cases Online.
Because let's be honest… we're all carrying little rectangles of stress around with us. If your phone case can add even a tiny bit of playfulness to your day, that's a win.
So what even is whimsical?
Right, in laymen's terms:
Whimsical design is when something feels playful and story-like — without trying too hard.
It's not necessarily loud. It doesn't need neon gradients and ten different fonts fighting each other. Whimsical can be soft, simple, even minimal… as long as it sparks that little "ha!" moment in your brain. Like:
- A character that looks like it's got a personality
- An object that feels slightly magical or absurd
- A scene that looks like it belongs in a children's book (but adults secretly love it more)
And the big thing? Whimsical art doesn't take itself too seriously. That's why it works.
Why whimsical stuff works so well on a phone case
A phone case is one of those objects you see constantly. Not once a week. Not once a day. Constantly. You pick it up to check messages, take photos, doomscroll, use maps, order food, pretend you're busy… you know the drill.
So if you're going to stare at something a hundred times a day, why not make it something that:
- Lifts your mood a notch
- Starts a conversation
- Makes you feel a bit more "you"
That's where whimsical designs quietly shine. They turn a boring, practical item into something a bit more personal. And if you didn't know already, I hate boring phone cases. If I start working on a design and don't like it, I will bin it, even if I have spent a few hours on it.
The "Cute Ocean Crew" - Minimal, but still whimsical
Let's start with three designs that are a perfect example of something that's simple, but still has a whimsical feel.
1) Cute Yellow Fish
This little guy is basically cheerful minimalism. It's not trying to be an ultra-realistic marine illustration. It's just… a happy fish, on a soft striped background, doing what happy fish do: existing and improving your mood.

2) Cute Clownfish
Same idea, but with more punch. Clownfish are naturally "characterful" anyway — you look at one and your brain goes, "Ah yes, that fish definitely has opinions." The design keeps it playful without turning it into cartoon chaos.

3) Cute Red Crab
The crab is my favourite kind of whimsical: it's got personality, but it still looks clean and modern. The smile does a lot of heavy lifting (in a good way).

And here's the nice part for new customers: 20% off your first order with code SAVE20. That's basically a polite nudge from the universe to treat yourself.
Whimsical doesn't have to mean "kiddie" - it can be weird, witty, and grown-up
This is the bit most people miss: whimsical isn't the same as childish.
It can be quirky. It can be sarcastic. It can be slightly surreal. It can even be a bit "witchy apothecary on a Tuesday afternoon".
A perfect example is the Notion Potion collection — jars with ridiculous ingredients and a bit of magical drama. I spent a lot of time working on these and I am really pleased with the results. Why? Well, to be honest, they are a bit different.
Chaos Blend - Notion Potion #06
This one leans into that "my life is a mess but we move" feeling. It's literally a potion label that looks like it belongs in some dusty wizard cupboard… except it's also basically describing modern life.

Influencium - Notion Potion #19
Same apothecary vibe, but it's more "quiet confidence". Like a little reminder that you're allowed to have a bit of power and presence, even if you're just popping to the shop.

This one is pure fun. It's whimsical with a wink — the kind of design that makes someone laugh and instantly decides your personality for you (in a good way).

That's the magic of whimsical design: it can be cute, but it can also be clever, odd, and unexpected.
Characters make it effortless - Enter WanderBlob
If you want "whimsical" in one word: characters.
Characters instantly turn design into story, even if it's subtle. You don't need an entire narrative. You just need something that makes people imagine one.
That's why the WanderBlob travel series works so beautifully. It's not a photograph of Italy or Istanbul or Jamaica. It's a little character living a tiny adventure — and your phone becomes the postcard.
WanderBlob Italy Adventure
The moustache and olive detail is such a mood.

Whimsical doesn't always scream for attention. Sometimes it just gently taps you on the shoulder and goes, "Go on… imagine you're somewhere else for a minute."
Storybook scenes - Whimsical as "mini escape"
Then you've got the designs that feel like a little illustrated world — the ones where you spot more details the longer you look.
Lake Adventure - Frogs, Owls & Forest Wildlife
This one is basically a calm, storybook wilderness moment that wraps around your phone. Frogs by the water, wildlife in the scene, a peaceful outdoors vibe… it's like carrying a tiny picture book cover in your pocket.

This is the kind of whimsical that doesn't rely on comedy. It relies on atmosphere. It's the "take a breath" version of whimsical.
And yes - sometimes whimsical is just a cat on holiday
I'm sorry, but the internet has decided: cats will always be relevant.
Whimsical Black Cat Holiday Mode
This is pure playful energy — a cat in holiday mode with retro vacation vibes, on a tough protective case. It's the type of design that makes people grin even if they're in a queue at the pharmacy.

Sometimes whimsy is complicated. Sometimes it's just… a cat living its best life.
My takeaway: whimsical is a design permission slip
If I had to boil it down into one thing I've learned, it's this:
Whimsical design gives you permission to have fun again.
It's a little break from the hyper-serious, hyper-polished world. And in a time where everything feels like it's trying to sell you something, optimise you, measure you, or rush you… whimsical design is oddly refreshing because it's allowed to be a bit pointless.
And "pointless" in art is often the point.
So yeah — I didn't know the word before consumer graphics. Now I love it. Because it's not just a style. It's an attitude.
